Whether you’re new to an area, your existing primary care physician is retiring, or you just feel like you need a change, finding a new doctor can be a daunting task.

Many that friends or family recommend may not be accepting new patients, so how can you find someone who’s right for you?

Boro Park for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a four-step process to finding a primary care physician that’s best for you.

  1. Start With Insurance

Before you delve into any more details, it will be most important that your new doctor is in-network with your insurance carrier. Insurance providers’ websites will allow you to search for a doctor, and if someone recommends a certain doctor to you, call their office to make sure they are in your provider’s network.

  1. Find a Specialist

Besides being a primary care physician, some may have an additional focus that meets your health needs, whether its cardiology, diabetes care, or managing arthritis. Calling around and searching on health providers’ websites can help link you up to a doctor that would be most beneficial to you.

  1. Think Logistics

Make sure that the doctor’s hours line up with when you’re available, and if location is important to you, see where they practice. Also note that some doctors will be at a certain office for a couple days and then a different one for the rest of the week, so it might be worth a phone call to make sure.

  1. It’s Okay to Change

If you feel like you were listened to and understood what the doctor was telling you after your first visit, then you probably have a good match. But if you have any doubts or negative feelings about the visit, you aren’t committed to staying with that doctor. Keep shopping around for another one!
